And that's how I feel about that...

I have a... shall we say strained relationship with the rest of the TMNT fandom. Ever since creating turtlecest I've gotten mixed feedback from the older members of the fandom, ones that have been posting together for years. Granted I wrote and posted turtleslash back in the year 2001, but since I never socialized with the fandom I'm not really considered a part of it.

Creating turtlecest caused some riffs for certain. There is tension between the "old" fans and the slashers, I feel it very well, and have posted about it before. I have tried my best to stick by my guns. But in doing so I'm afraid I might have become elitest myself... but I wonder if this is a bad thing?

Point in case... Stealthy Stores, a tmnt fanfic website run by a male fan who is anti-slash, who contains a high population of passive/agressive anti-turtlecest fans who like to vent about how horrible slash is (also discussed in previous entries), are having a contest.

This would be fine, as it doesn't effect my life any... most of my favorite fics will not be nominated and I don't particularly care, as what the rest of the turtle fandom does is none of my concern.

UNTIL... until they start posting to my community telling the members of my community about the contest.

Here is a link to it:
http://community.livejournal.com/turtlecest/244618.html

The post reads:

The Nominations Window for the 2007 TMNT Adult Fan Fiction Awards is now open. It will close Midnight, Sunday 3rd of February 2008.

For more information the rules post is located here on the LJ community TMNT_Adult and also here on Stealthy Stories: NFU

Note: participation in this competition (both nomination submissions and voting) is restricted to members of these two sites. However, stories posted anywhere online during 2007 that are rated 'M' or higher are eligible to be nominated.

My reply to this was as follows:

I appreciate your posting of these contests to our group, however the fact that the voting is restricted to members of your group makes this off topic and spam.

If the rest of the fandom wishes members of turtlecest to vote in their contests then make it so they can do so without having to join up to a certain website or group. If that's not possible than I'll be deleting this post within the next 24 hours. I feel it is elitest and unfair.

On that note perhaps this community can have an open vote turtlecest awards or something to make up for it.

Thank you for your time.

So there you have it. Most people may find my decision to be out of line, I have no idea, I just found the idea of joining a website which has already displayed homophobic anti-slash tendancies to be an offensive suggestion, and, furthermore one has to post 50 times to Stealthy Stories to get into the adult section. How do you all feel?

Don't most of us hold memberships in all of the TMNT areas we can? I know I do. I was thrilled to find turtlecest, as it worked better for my writing than het-stories, but I post in multiple locations. And I, as a 'cesty writer, am apparently nominated for... something... over there. The slash-haters are having to accept that there are just as many of us as there are of them, I think.

And a few of them have taken the time to read our arguments in favor of 'cest, and some have come around on the idea, I think.

We're not as outcast as we used to be.

No, some members of turtlecest don't ever write het and don't find it interesting to hang out in areas with people who don't like or share their interests.

In fact a least one nominated person in turtlecest I know finds it awkward that she can't see her nomination without having to email these people she's never had contact with before to find out more...

I see your point, both here and in your general post...but what was more interesting to me is that the acceptance level at SS is changing. I've seen a few cest fics posted over there lately, some to great reviews.

And clearly the nominating group isn't aware of the difference between the groups! I've seen scads of stuff that I think only got posted here, as well as all of my stuff which I know only got posted here, nominated.

I guess what I'm saying is: you are right to point out the hypocrisy of posting contest information to this group, since this group (where it doesn't overlap) isn't eligible to participate in a meaningful way. But I really hope that the solution is to open up the nominating/voting process, and not to exclude our stories.

I agree that the...attitude? Is becoming more tolerant over there. But still, homophobic conversations are still being openly held in the discussion areas, without any admin interference or reprimand. Yet if someone sticks up for slash (not even cest, just homosexuality in general) then an admin will step in to reprimand the person defending their views for 'getting things heated.' Apparently, it's fine to talk down a lifestyle or view so long as everyone shares in the distaste of it, but once people voice their offense of it, they've become the initiators. -_-

So I can understand not wanting to hold membership there. I can understand being put off when told 'you have to be a member to participate.' I am hoping that Rei will allow noms/voting within the Turtlecest community since I've reminded her that we are indeed age-restricted when it comes to adult content; simply friend-lock it! The only way to change the "only het gets awards" thing it to vote for what we want to see win.

And about being nominated for cest...heh...I already told you that I was nominating you, reasonabledist. Also, if the 'at least one nominated member' is Crabbapplered, I already told her what fics I personally nominated since she's never participated before and I wanted her permission. XP

Hm. My point- I see both sides of it, and I also see a possible compromise. I'm suggesting it to Rei, and would like you to consider it as well, Marie. If we open noms/voting to age-approved members of this site, that should be acceptable, right? And we'd get more turtlecest and variety in the competition.

Eh. Done rambling.

That was what we were fighting for, or at least I was. It does wonders to help bind the fandom and tell the people over at turtlecest (of which I'm guessing at least half of them are only on turtlecest/turtleslash) that they are accepted members of the tmnt fandom. This is wonderful news and I for one am very happy. :)

You've probably already spoken to Rei by now, but in case you haven't, she likes the idea and hadn't realized about the age-restricted friends-locking.

I'm also pushing for the nomination time restrictions to be extended a little, since we're just now getting the info/access to it.

You told me...? Uh, duh. Sorry, I'm as flaky as baklava, and only getting worse as I go along.

And thanks.
